Should organizations care about cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity has become a genuine concern for many business owners as high amounts of consumer data are stored online. However, there are still some small and medium-sized companies that think they are off the radar of cybercriminals. This misconception is based on the assumption that only large companies can be targeted as they can afford to pay more consistent ransoms.
The only “requirement” for an attack to take place is just to be online. Stored data is just as sensitive and vital to small and large companies, and they know it. Therefore, there will be something to gain from attacking anyone online. In fact, 51% of small businesses that fall victim to ransomware pay the money, and 95% of cybersecurity incidents cost between $826 and $653,587. Quite a lot to gain and enough reason to target small and medium size businesses.
Another misconception is that business owners think these attacks are large and loud, ample events that you have to hear about in the news when in reality, they are mainly smaller ransomware attacks, viruses, human error, phishing, DDoS attacks, and insider threats. Also, according to a 2022 report on IT Security for SMBs, only 18% of small and medium companies check all the requisite IT security boxes, while 13% do not implement any measure2, making them the perfect target of cybercriminals.
Moreover, most of these businesses (around 75%) never have the financial power to recover from such an attack, and 55% of consumers feel reluctant to work with companies whose data was compromised once.
As a business owner, you need to ask yourself what the chances are of being in the 46% of companies with less than 1000 employees or the 37% of companies with less than 100 employees that have come into attack in recent years4. What security system have you installed, and could you recover from a hit?
